  • Corrosion: If the fluids being used are too aggressive for the plate material small holes can form, leading to internal cross-contamination.
  • Improper Tightening: If the plate pack isn’t tightened to the manufacturer’s specific instructions the gaskets won’t be compressed enough to create a seal. On the other hand, over-tightening can crush and damage the gaskets.
  • Temperature Fluctuations: Rapid temperature fluctuations cause the metal plates to expand and contract too quickly, which can shift the gaskets out of place.
  • Operating Outside Design Parameters: Many older PHEs were designed for specific high temperatures. If you’ve upgraded to modern condensing boilers that run at lower temperatures, the plate pack may no longer perform efficiently.
