89% of UK Business Leaders Plan to Decarbonise: Here’s How to Overcome the Barriers

As revealed in E.ON’s latest report, The ReIndustrial Revolution, UK manufacturers could achieve £2.1 billion in cumulative gas cost savings by 2035, simply by phasing out gas and upgrading to clean, low-carbon technologies.

The report states that 89% of UK business leaders are planning to invest in low-carbon technology within the next two years, displaying the increasing demand for clean energy. Yet, the crucial question remains – if the financial and environmental benefits are so good, why haven’t more businesses made the switch?

Beyond Cost: Commercial Decarbonisation Barriers

While financial constraints are an important consideration, many organisations are also concerned about disruption to operations, available plant space, project complexity and the perceived risk of adopting new technology.

According to the report, 48% of UK businesses claim high upfront costs as the single biggest barrier, while another 37% struggle with return on investment (ROI) uncertainty. For commercial applications, traditional Air Source Heat Pumps present several key challenges, including:

  • High Upfront Costs: Substantial initial capital investment often stalls projects during budget approvals.
  • Large Outdoor Footprint: Standard units require significant exterior space, restricting installation options on space-constrained sites.
  • Complex Installations: Traditional installations often take 3-5 days, or more once external plant, groundworks, pipework, electrical infrastructure and commissioning requirements are considered.

What If You Don’t Have Outdoor Space?

For many schools, care homes, hotels, leisure facilities, and commercial buildings, the primary bottleneck is not a lack of desire to decarbonise, but the absence of suitable outdoor space for traditional units. As energy prices continue to fluctuate and Net Zero targets become increasingly pressing, businesses require solutions that deliver measurable savings without operational disruption.

Overcoming the Challenges: The AW Series

The AW Series was engineered to bridge this gap. Designed to eliminate the space, cost and installation barriers of traditional commercial ASHPs, it eliminates most external plant requirements for faster, less disruptive installation.

The AW Series Advantage:

  • Indoor Installation – No planning concerns or reduced visual impact
  • Compact Footprint – Saving valuable space
  • Faster Installation – Reducing labour & overall project costs
  • Lower Capital Cost – Improved ROI
  • Integrated Buffer – Simpler system design
