Project overview
We were contacted to upgrade the plant room equipment at Gloucester Services, recognised as the UK’s No. 1 motorway service station. The site’s existing domestic hot water (DHW) system was no longer meeting the site’s operational demands, leading to inconsistent performance and increased operating costs, so they turned to us.
They chose our ultra-low carbon technology to protect their nature-friendly building, the objective was to design and deliver a system with unmatched reliability and leading sustainability.
The challenge
The site required a full plant room survey to note existing system details and perform a thorough inspection.
Although their existing plant room equipment was relatively new, it had originally been designed with a DHW pre-heat function that was no longer operational. As a result, the system failed to maintain consistent hot water volumes during peak demand periods, leading to inefficient operation and rising energy waste.
Additionally, access to the plant room presented an additional challenge. Restricted entry meant that any replacement equipment had to be capable of being transported in sections, then assembled and commissioned on site. This required careful planning to ensure the selected solution could be installed safely and efficiently without compromising performance.
The Solution
Following a detailed site assessment, we worked closely with our facilities management partner to deliver a sustainable, low-carbon solution with significantly reduced C02 outputs.
The upgrade included the installation of two high-efficiency Rendamax R606 EVO condensing boilers alongside a Virdis Energy Duplex GP Water Packaged Plate Heat Exchanger and a gasketed Bare Plate for system separation of the new boilers from the old pipework.
To overcome the plant room’s restricted access, the boilers were supplied dismantled, allowing for seamless maneuvering and reassembly on site. Additionally, due to restriction issues the existing DHW storage cylinder was repurposed and re-piped as part of the new system.
The Result
The upgraded system has been operating successfully since spring, providing reliable, sustainable heating and DHW to the thousands of customers who visit Gloucester Services each day.
The new installation delivers a high-efficiency, ultra-low carbon plant room that significantly reduces the site’s carbon footprint while permanently lowering energy costs.
The site now benefits from:
- Ultra-low carbon heating and hot water with sustainability goals met
- Reliable domestic hot water, even during peak demand
- Improved heating performance throughout the site
- Increased system efficiency and lower operating costs
- A future-proofed plant room designed around the building’s operational requirements
